  4. This package contains various utilities shipped with sane-backends, among
  5. which saned, the network scanner daemon used to share scanners over the
  6. network.

  12. Please read this file carefully to setup your saned server properly.

  19.  Setting up permissions for saned
  20.  --------------------------------

  22. A saned user and a saned group have been added to your system; it is highly
  23. recommended to run saned as user and group saned and NEVER EVER as root.
  24.  
  25. To operate properly, saned must be able to access your scanners; different
  26. setups are possible, depending on who should be able to use the scanners:
  27.  
  28.  * saned users only:
  29.    => device owned by saned:saned, saned:root or root:saned
  30.  
  31.  * saned users and local users:
  32.    => device owned by saned:scanner, local users added to the scanner group
  33.  
  34.  * local users only:
  35.    => device owned by root:scanner, local users added to the scanner group
  36.  
  37. By default the saned user is NOT part of the scanner group. If you add the
  38. saned user to the scanner group, ALL scanners will be made available over the
  39. network without restrictions. Do that if you do not want/need to restrict one
  40. or more scanners to local users only.
  41.  
  42. If you intend to use saned with a USB scanner, note that the permissions for
  43. USB scanners are handled by udev.
  44.

  46. appropriate permissions.

  48.  Running saned from inetd
  49.  ------------------------

  51. To enable saned in the default configuration (running as user and group saned),
  52. use update-inetd to enable the service:
  53.  # update-inetd --enable sane-port
  54. To disable saned, use update-inetd to disable the service:
  55.  # update-inetd --disable sane-port
  56.  
  57. If you want to run saned under another user and/or group, edit /etc/inetd.conf
  58. and change saned:saned for the appropriate user:group combination.
  59.  
  60.  Running saned as a standalone daemon
  61.  ------------------------------------

  63. When run as a standalone daemon, saned can advertise its services over the
  64. network, and the SANE clients will automatically discover the saned servers
  65. (provided the clients support this).

  67. To run saned as a standalone server:
  68.   - if you were previously running saned from inetd, disable it (see above)
  69.   - run dpkg-reconfigure sane-utils
